Setting goals is easy. Achieving them is not. Many people start with big ambitions but quickly lose momentum because their goals lack clear structure. Without a solid plan, vague goals become overwhelming, confusing and most of the time forgotten altogether. This post explains why most goals fail without structure and introduces a simple, practical method to turn your ambitions into clear, actionable steps: the 30/60/90 framework.

An organised planner with a 30/60/90 day goal-setting layout helps break down vague goals into clear steps.
Why Vague Goals Often Fail
Many people set goals like “get fit,” “grow my business,” or “learn a new skill.” These goals sound good but lack specifics. Without clarity, it is going to be hard to know where to start or how to measure progress. This leads to frustration and eventually giving up within 2 weeks.
Common problems with vague goals include:
No clear deadline: Without a timeline, it is easy to procrastinate.
Lack of measurable milestones: You don’t know if you are making progress.
No accountability: Without someone or something to check in with, motivation fades.
Unclear actions: You don’t know what steps to take next.
When goals are unclear, your brain struggles to prioritise and focus. This causes wasted energy and missed opportunities.
How the 30/60/90 Framework Provides Structure
The 30/60/90 framework breaks down your goal into three distinct phases, each lasting 30 days. This approach creates a clear roadmap with achievable milestones, making progress easier to track and maintain.
Here is how it works:
First 30 days: Focus on learning and preparation. This phase is about gathering information, building habits, and setting the foundation.
Next 30 days (31-60): Start implementing your plan. Take consistent action and adjust based on what you learn.
Final 30 days (61-90): Optimise and refine. Evaluate your progress, fix issues, and push toward completion.
This structure helps you avoid overwhelm by focusing on manageable chunks. It also builds momentum as you see tangible progress every month. The other really great benefit to using this framework is to be able to add the tasks that come up outside of your concentrated goals. You can always assess "does this tasks require immediate action or can it be dealt with at a later stage (30,60,90)?
Applying the 30/60/90 Framework to Your Goals
Let’s say your goal is to improve your public speaking skills. Here is how you could use the 30/60/90 framework:
Days 1-30: Research techniques, watch expert speeches and practice basic exercises daily.
Days 31-60: Join a local speaking club or take a workshop. Deliver short speeches and get feedback.
Days 61-90: Record your speeches, analyse your performance and work on areas needing improvement. Aim to speak confidently in front of a larger audience.
Breaking your goal into these phases makes it easier to stay focused and motivated.
How Strategy, Accountability and Clarity Sessions Support Success
The 30/60/90 framework works best when combined with strategy, accountability and clarity sessions.
Strategy: Define your goal clearly and outline the steps for each 30-day phase. This prevents drifting off course.
Accountability: Share your plan with a coach, mentor, or peer. Regular check-ins keep you honest and motivated.
Clarity sessions: Periodically review your progress and adjust your plan. These sessions help you stay aligned with your goal and overcome any obstacles you face.
Together, these elements create a strong support system that turns vague goals into achievable success.
Real-Life Example of the 30/60/90 Approach
A client wanted to launch an online course but felt overwhelmed by the process. Using the 30/60/90 framework, we broke the project into phases:
First 30 days: Research target audience and outline course content.
Next 30 days: Create course materials and record videos.
Final 30 days: Launch the course, market it and gather feedback.
With clear deadlines and accountability, the client launched on time and exceeded their enrolment goals.
Tips for Making the 30/60/90 Framework Work for You
