The Silent Sabotage – Workplace Bullying & Career Suppression

For many women in corporate Australia, workplace bullying isn't just about harsh words, it is about systematic suppression, gaslighting, and isolation. It is about managers who fear your growth, colleagues who resent your potential, and cultures that enable toxic behaviours to flourish.

I know this because I lived it.

My Experience at Genesys Australia

When I joined Genesys Australia, I was upfront, I had limited experience in scripting and closing sales, but I was eager to learn. I was promised training, support, and growth. But what I got was quite the opposite.

My manager deliberately withheld training and guidance. I was lied to about a major sales conference overseas, only to be put on a poor performance plan the day the entire team was flying out. When I raised concerns about my lack of training, I was ignored.

Then I discovered the real reason for my mistreatment. The woman actively blocking my growth had a personal vendetta, years earlier, she had been involved with an ex of mine. Instead of professional integrity, she let her personal feelings dictate my fate. I was punished for something I had no control over.

I was left unsupported, belittled, and eventually deemed an underperformer. It destroyed my confidence. It took me years to recover from the crippling anxiety this experience caused. I would have panic attacks just showing up for job interviews. Even now, the memory still stings.

The Patterns of Workplace Bullying & Career Suppression

This experience is not unique to me. Women across industries have faced:

  • Exclusion from Opportunities , Being denied training, promotions, or access to leadership.

  • Gaslighting & Undermining – Making women question their abilities and worth.

  • Retaliation for Speaking Up – Being placed on performance plans or pushed out entirely.

How to Reclaim Your Power in a Toxic Workplace

  • Recognise the Patterns & Document Everything Keep a record of emails, messages, and incidents. Having evidence can help you protect yourself if things escalate.

  • Find an External Mentor or Sponsor Sometimes, the best support comes from outside your direct team.

  • Find a senior leader, mentor, or advocate who can offer guidance and support.

  • Know When to Walk Away Some battles aren’t worth your mental health. If your workplace is toxic beyond repair, prioritising your well-being and seeking a healthier environment is an act of self-preservation, not failure.
